Hide backend feature suddenly not working in WP Security

I have WP security installed to hide my back end. Usually any requests to wp-login.php are blocked, but for some reason its stopped working. Ive checked the .htaccess file and its there and looks like it should do, but why is my login page public accessible again?

Hello Clive, hope it is not too late for that.
Please check in your .htaccess again and move the rules added by the WP security plugin on the top of the file, then test again.
Let me know if the problem persists.

I deleted all the rules created by WP Security and generated a new key. The plug-in rewrote the .htaccess and it seems to be working again. I’m just curious as to how and why it stopped working all of a sudden without my intervention.
