  • Any Feedback/Ideas

I have a site now for over 3 years and have a very good page ranking with Google Yahoo msn etc. I want to move it over to RP and rebuild it using joomla. Now can I some way keep the page rank/traffic when I move the site to RP and change the format? and if so how does this work.

    Cheers,

Moving your site shouldn't affect your PR if you keeping the same domain name, but changing the format will.

Using joomla use the SEO functions and maybe use the SEO components like OPEN-SEF.

      Thanks for the help Loon.
I knew this would be the case and one of the reasons I have not changed or upgraded my site. What is "SEO functions and maybe use the SEO components like OPEN-SEF"

        SEO - Search Engine Optimisation
Joomla offers these functions to dynamicly alter page titles, discription and keyword meta tags and to also offer a simple Search Engine Friendly url's

        eg.
        www.yoursite.com/index.php?com=frontpage&item=23

using the SEF option will change it to

Let's say this page is titled "Using SEO" if you use OPEN-SEF the url will read

        www.yoursite.com/Using_SEO.html

These all help towards the way your pages are viewed and ranked by search engines.

            hey van...
I have been messing around a bit with joomla and also a pre-made template from template monster. at this point I am kinda holding back to see what the new customizable templates that RSP are gonna launch will be like. Then I will make my decision on which way to go...this is just me..
There is one thing you must remember about Joomla, it is a total Content Management System and it's overall structure is designed around a self contained enviornment thus, to use it as an RSP site you would have to pretty much strip it down to a bare bone core. Joomla is built around a module for this and a module for that...and these modules can be added and taken away depending on the users need. You will not need such modules as the user login, polls, who's online and many more. Of course you can incorporate some of the modules but I must say that this may not be a wise choice. Joomla and it's database structure can be a bit heavy on the resources of your cpu load.

In conclusion: yes Joomla can be used yet you must remember that the load time of your hosting site will directly reflect the capabilities of the hosting you have to offer. Keep joomla simple...maybe with a quick loading pre-made template.

Thanks for your time and may God Bless Us All, Doug

I think I will not use it for my RP site but maybe for my music site I have vanhiphop.com as it needs a upgrade and I dont have the $$$$ to pay someone to build me one.

                no prob van,
Joomla is a great alternative in the way of making a website but to be fair i must add this: Please make sure you are always using the latest stable version of any PHP code. I believe the latest version of stable Joomla is 1.0.12 and has the latest security codes within it. You must remember that PHP applications like this are somewhat a bullseye for the hacky do da's hanging around and can be so exploited. Although Joomla does a really good job preventing this in this version there will most likely always be a loophole found by some hacky do with nothing better to do than put a big...I HACKED THIS SITE on your frontpage...LOL. Most often this is all they want..the recognition that they did infact hack a site and not a malicious hack. But there are those that may want to gain from what you have to offer. I can not stress enough the fact of upgrading Joomla with any security upgrades they have to offer.

also Joomla has been boasting about a new 1.5 version to be released in the near future and can be easily upgraded when that time comes. Hope this helps ya...

Thanks again and as always May God Bless, Doug

I have used Joomla from the beginning, I originally came from the early Mambo days way before the split.

With a little bit of knowledge of php a component could be written for joomla using the API that RSP offer and you could include all the functions of an RSP template site.

Joomla I have always found to be pretty stable and the developers are very security conscious quick to act if a problem is spotted.

Keeping modules to a minimum is a good tip to page load times. Overall I would recommend Joomla to base you site on, and if you want to use it for a hosting site, create a component that uses the API or get someone to do it for you.
