I have never been successful in selling hosting alone. I just package it with my website design business and sell it that way. But to clarify, it is not entirely a package deal. I tell them where to go to sign up and bill for design services separately. That has worked for me.
My niche is small businesses and organizations that do not have the time or the expertise to develop a custom website. I also sell them on a maintenance program that pays on a monthly service fee. However most of my clients opt to pay for the 12 months maintenance upfront. Which is why I have never asked, or care, for a monthly plan.
I project to make about $2,000 this year on commissions alone. But since this is only about 5% of my sales it isn't a big moneymaker but it pays the expenses. Not a great income, I admit, but since I am retired I don't want to be working hard either. It cuts into my fishing and travel time.
What I love about this business is that it can be done anywhere that I can plug in my laptop and have internet access. I'll be traveling about 3 months in Europe this summer and carrying my business in my laptop bag. You've got to love that!

The RSP provides customers with the capability to run additional services and applications in a protected partition on the Steelhead appliance.Things are a lot simpler if you think of it this way: You pay compound interest on the amount you owe on your ******** and you earn compound interest on your RRSP investments.

I always offer RSP hosting besides design, marketing, maintenance or development services as a separate and cheap option. With the right programming skills you can sell a lot of accounts, do a web app that helps businesses and charge them for it, include hosting and you're set.
Now marketing it online is a whole different business, personally never even bothered, I will be offering the server options through API and keep the hosting as I currently do.
I work in the online design, marketing and development fields and can optimize whatever I do to keep them under the TOS statements I never allow anyone else on these accounts and do everything for my clients, therefore my clients never have problems with their websites and I don't have to explain WHY their 1337 memory hog spam scrip stops working when I sold and said UNLIMITED hosting. I always know requirements of clients and can offer servers for anything requiring more resources. I believe clients will be pretty pissed to find out they could have got the same package for less than what you sold it for, getting a bad rep as a "hosting company" is your death unless you are huge enough to support it and improve your services ASAP.
Also I believe RSP resellers mostly do their business offline, talking face to face to people, sell it at the reseller price or close to that and charge other services. My business plan is a bit different but I always tell my clients the real price of hosting and the extra charge for other hosting related options (management of analytics, apps, email and whatever else they need).Last edited by unknownnf; 24-09-2010, 03:10 PM.

I have to disagree with you on the following point:

I have found that most people do not care about hosting or saving a dollar or two per month. They want a nice website, reliability and service at a reasonable price. That is what I offer. They are too busy with their business to take time with the learning curve to set up their accounts, figure out the control panel, load their scripts, set up their email and etc. That is what they hire me for.
I never worry about anyone finding out that I am a reseller. So is Walmart, every car dealership and insurance agent out there. Aren't real estate agents just resellers? I consider myself a value-added reseller since I take care of setting everything up for them and expect to be compensated for that. When you hire an Attorney you are paying him to do for you what you could do yourself if you had the time and expertise. I am no different.
My clients are not those that are looking to resell hosting. Would not even consider trying to market to those people. That market is too competitive and isn't worth my time. So I don't have any worries that they might find a plan a little cheaper, or if they find out they could get the same hosting from RSP at "factory direct" pricing.
