I have several sites selling the same things with different domains on one hosting account. I was told that the search engines will know that they all the same site unless I buy different IP for each of the domain. Is that true? Any one knows how that works?

i don't think this is true.
since many servers host a few thousand sites,but they still shown on the search enginee.
but this is just my own opinion.

duplicate content on a different domain names affects your ranking and subsequently spiders/crawler will not visit ur websites as often as they would coz of content duplicity.. IMHO

try validating this by searching about duplicate content and how it affect pagerank and search engine crawlers behavior..
