  • File quota suggestion (for web hosting)

    Hi There.
I readed your web hosting service and the "File Quota" paragraph says
"File Quota - The file quota (the maximum amount of files to be hosted in a single web hosting account) is different for each web hosting plan. The Business plan is entitled to host maximum 150,000 files and the Corporate plan - up to 300,000 files. The Enterprise plan allows customers to host up to 450,000 files. All other plans are allowed to host 50,000 files."
Now there should be an option to raise the files limit by paying a fee like we can do with disk space/bandwidth and cpu limits from the upgrades menu of control panel.
What do you think about this suggestion ?

Well if you have 450000 files you most likely are doing file hosting or using a insane amount of resources. My dedicated is running 25 php scripts and im only running 12 thousand inodes.

Asmar, I think this would be impractical for a shared hosting solution. People who need to host more files should consider a VPS or (better yet) dedicated server instead.

But many other hosts provide ability to store unlimited number of files and still they are fast.
In my suggestion RSP should remove this limit or it should add an ability for us to keep upgrading this limit by paying a fee.

Yes many companies claim to give unlimited, but read their terms of service and you will find out that you will get bumped or suspended for over-usage.
The unlimited offering is a marketing tool. They offer it knowing and hoping that most people will never reach even a small fraction of what they are bragging about.

Actually unlimited disk space and bandwidth is a trick for sure but the ability to store unlimited files is not a trick at all.
RSP can charge a fee to upgrade the file quota just like we can upgrade space and bandwidth quota from upgrades option of control panel.

No, many web host companies (may be 99% and above) do not welcome file hosting in their shared hosting plan, unless you go for file hosting.

So even they don't mention about the file quota, but as soon as you have much enough files to alert them, they will suspend your account, and tell you, you should go for file hosting instead of shared hosting, because you host too much files etc...

Beside that, in their TOS, you will probably see, you should have xx% file are using for your content etc, for those who use our service as file hosting or backup will be banned la la la...

              Just my 2 cent

                Hello Asmar,

No other shared host that I know of offers the ability to host an unlimited number of files, and I've used and worked with/for several. The fact is every shared host has to limit the number of files (or, in proper terms, inodes) each user can host on a shared hosting server. However, most hosts are dishonest and do not post this limit where users can clearly see it.

To test this out, I recommend you open an account on HostGator's Baby plan, and upload several hundred thousand files. See what happens.

I know that hostgator has a limit of 150,000 iNodes (files) but this limit is to prevent users from using the "unlimited" space which they provided.
I had seen some sites and mostly forums using more then 1000,000 iNodes and still on shared hosting.
However if ResellersPanel wants to limit file quota to maintain the speed of their servers and etc... then they can give us an option to pay to increase that limit just like we can do with disk space, bandwidth and cpu usage.
                  Isn't it a good idea ?

No, it's not a good idea. Look, this has been discussed on this forum many times before. And I've already explained why it's not a good idea here in this thread. There are limits to a shared hosting server. Even allowing users to pay to upgrade to a higher inode limit doesn't fix the problem of the server running slower due to longer indexing times, etc. When you look at these other sites, how do you know they have more than 100,000 files to them? Are you sure of that?

Just like ISP's offer unlimited bandwidth and Mobile Phone Networks offer Unlimited texts etc.

Then in the next breath they remind you about the Fare Usage Policy or not, when you find you account has been blocked for breaking it.

Asmar, as far as I know there are no plans to offer a higher file quota as an optional upgrade. We feel that the plans that we provide include an ample file quota. If a client needs to host over 450,000 files, the client should consider a VPS or dedicated server solutions. As The Stealthy One has pointed out, the number of files hosted on a server can indeed affect server performance. A huge number of files hosted on a server can considerably prolong some operations like file consistency/integrity checks in case of a server crash and subsequent reboot. ResellersPanel is honest about file quotas, which are clearly specified in our terms and conditions of service, unlike many other hosting providers, where these limits are not specified or are buried down somewhere in the fine print.

The Loon, the biggest fixed line operator in Bulgaria, Vivacom, which has over 90% of the local fixed line market, has recently introduced plans with unlimited local and international calls for a fixed monthly fee. Sounds great, until you read the fine print, where it says that calls are limited to 3,600 minutes per month. Granted 3,600 minutes is a lot, but it is not unlimited. I have considered filling a false advertising complaint against them.

I also seem to remeber fromthe annals of history on the forum (I believe you told us Milen) that one other reason for the quota limit was for the backup system to be able to run at an efficient speed.

                          I could be wrong though...

This was one of the reasons and still is though to a lesser extent. We have made changes to our server system introducing different elements of cluster solutions, reducing the load on servers when backup is performed. This is one of the reasons that allowed us to increase file quotas to the current values from lower ones in the past.
